Radiation Transport Simulation Studies Using MCNP for a Cow Phantom to Determine an Optimal Detector Configuration for a New Livestock Portal. (August 2012) Joe Justina, M.Sc., Mangalore University Co-Chairs of Advisory Committee: Dr. Craig M. Marianno Dr. Sunil S. Chirayath A large radiological accident will result in the contamination of surrounding people, animal, vegetation etc. In such a situation assessing of the level of contamination becomes necessary to plan for the decontamination. There are plans existing for evaluating contamination on people. However, there are limited to no plans to evaluate animals. It is the responsibility of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to decontaminate animals. So the objective of this thesis work was to design a scalable gamma radiation portal monitor (RPM) which can be used to assess the level of contamination on large animals like cattle. This work employed a Monte Carlo NParticle (MCNP) radiation transport code for the purpose. A virtual system of cow, radiation source representing the contamination, cattle chute and different detector configurations were modeled. NaI scintillation detectors were modeled for this work. To find the optimal detector size and configuration, different detector orientations were simulated for different source positions using the MCNP code. Also simulations were

Comparison of I-131, I-123 Absorbed Dose and Tc-99m in Thyroid Scanning Using MCNP Code in ORNL-MIRD Phantom
Introduction: Thyroid cancer is at the ninth from ten of common malignant cancer. A man has higher risk to get Thyroid cancer that a woman has. This organ is lain near human neck. The use of radioactive I-131, I-123 and Tc-99m for diagnosis of thyroid cancer has a risk where other organs around Thyroid will accept dose of radiation. One of the risks is large dose which is accep...

Background: In treating patients with radiation, the degree of accuracy for the delivery of tumor dose is recommended to be within ± 5% by ICRU in report 24. The experimental studies have shown that the presence of low-density inhomogeneity in areas such as the lung can lead to a greater than 30% change in the water dose data. Therefore, inhomogeneity corrections should be used in treatment pla...

Background: An effective method for management of large and bulky malignant tumors. This treatment modality is also known as Specially Fractionated Radiation Therapy (SFRT). In this treatment technique a grid block converted the open radiation field into a series of pencil beams. Dosimetric characteristics of an external beam grid radiation field have been investigated using experimental and Mo...
متن کاملOrgan and effective dose arising from conventional diagnostic X-ray examinations by Monte Carlo simulation (MCNP-4C Code)
ABSTRACTBackground: Monte Carlo simulation has been used by many researchers to calculate organ and effective dose of patients arising from conventional X-ray examinations. In this study the radiation transport code, MCNP-4C, has been used to perform Monte Carlo simulations to estimate radiation dose delivered to different organs in conventional X-ray examinations.Material and Methods: In this...
متن کاملEvaluation of the Portal Imaging System Performance for an Elekta Precise Linac in Radiotherapy
Introduction: Electronic portal imaging devices (EPIDs) provide two- and three-dimensional planar and volumetric cone beam images to improve the accuracy of radiation treatment delivery. Periodic quality assurance (QA) of EPIDs is essential for dosimetric verification in radiotherapy. In this study, a QA program was implemented to evaluate the function of the EPID to be confident in applying co...
